The How To’s Of Creating A Website

Unfortunately, even though each website begins with a momentous idea, a groundbreaking idea alone is not sufficient to create an equally persuasive website. There are three elementary steps that must be undertaken in order for your concept of a great website to become a reality. The first step is to select the right web hosting company that offers services you need in a budget you can afford. You can compare web hosting companies online; however nothing can substitute listing out the pro's and con's of each host, from their products and services to their customer feedback reviews to how much is this going to cost you.

How To Write An Awesome About Page
Imagine that you've met a friend on the Internet. Let's call him John. He's invited you to stay at his beach house in Hawaii. You've never seen John face to face. Would you trust him blindly, or would you want to check him out before staying with him? You'd probably want to check him out - I would. Why? Because I would need to trust a person I'm going to spend time with, and knowing more about someone is a way to build that trust. We learn to trust someone as we get to know them. Trust grows through knowing a person. That's why the About page is important. People who consider becoming a subscriber want to know whom they are following. They want to be able to trust you. And they need to like you. After all, you wouldn't hang out with someone you don't like, would you?

Make Your Website Sizzle – 8 Ideas to Make Your Website Fun, Interesting, and Important
Make Your Website Sizzle – 8 Ideas to Make Your Website Fun, Interesting, and Important
By Bob Negen
These elements are what make your website fun, interesting, important, and relevant for your customers. This is what’s going to make you stand out from the crowd when a new customer checks you out for the first time. And what will keep your current customers visiting over and over again. Here are just some of the possible elements you could include to make your website sizzle.
- Information that positions you and your store as the expert. Giving your customers good, interesting-to-them information is a key element in building a great website. This could be tips on how to use your product. Example: a vacuum store could list household cleaning tips, or a garden center could list planting tips.
It could be articles written by you that are interesting for your customers. Example: a running store owner could write an article on the best 5, 10, and 15 mile runs in the area, or a coffee shop owner could write a page of recipes that use coffee as an ingredient.
Or it could be a ‘hot trend’ list. Example: a fishing store lists the best baits for local fish in the past month, or an interior design store lists the top ten colors for next year with the brand name paint color names that match.
Give product reviews. Use your expertise in your industry to give product reviews. You can also have your staff do the reviews or even post customer reviews.
- Information about your special events and promotions. Both before and especially after the event. Before the event of course you’ll want to give complete event details and an invitation to attend. If you have several events a year you may want to have a schedule of events page. It is very important to keep this up to date.
After the event post pictures, descriptions, contest results, anything fun or exciting that happened during your special event. The more personal connections you can make here the better. Customers who were at the event as well as those who didn’t attend will like going to this page.
- A resource page with links to other good sites. Give them links to other non-competing websites that they might find useful, interesting or fun. Don’t include links that aren’t really relevant or are not very interesting – that will immediately shoot down your credibility and “cool” factor. It’s better to have no links than bad ones. Don’t forget to have these links open a new browser window! Otherwise your website will “disappear” when they click on the resource link.
- A virtual store tour. It’s really true that a picture is worth a thousand words and fortunately the web is a very visual medium. Use as many pictures as possible to help your customers get a feel for your store, your products, and your services. It may sound too difficult to do, but it really can be quite easy. You don’t need streaming video or audio. Simply take pictures of your store, give them interesting captions, and put them in order on a page to create a “store tour”.
- Case studies or pictures of customers using your products and services. People love to read about other people and what they are doing. They want to be inspired and have their creativity sparked. They also want to avoid mistakes that others have made. Show a customer that had a problem (one that other customers might also have) and how your products or services fixed the problem, that’s great content.
For example a garden center might show before and after pictures of a client’s dirt and dead grass backyard transformed into a lovely outdoor living space for the family. A yarn store might have a gallery of completed customer knitting projects. A custom framing gallery could show a special piece of art, tell the customer’s story about the piece, and show a before and after picture of the piece. Or show the piece hanging in the customer’s home.
Another fun thing to do is post pictures of people wearing your store t-shirt all over the world, or using your products around the globe.
- Expanded information about you, your staff and your store. Anything you can do to enhance the human connection between you and your customers strengthens your competitive edge. A few possibilities: include short bios with fun facts about each employee, employee product picks, a pictorial history of your store or company (my, you’ve aged gracefully!), or an employee of the month page.
- A calendar of events. Having calendars filled with events of interest to your customers are a great way to be a broader resource, bring your customers back to your website more often and attract hot prospects.
Post more than your own store events, post any events that your customers might find interesting, helpful or fun. If you own a garden center you might post all the classes that a gardener might find of interest, including master gardening classes, seminars hosted by your local agricultural cooperative and even meetings of the local garden club. If you own an art gallery or your customer base is filled with people who appreciate the arts you could post all the fine art events in your area. If you have a toy store you could list all the family friendly activities in your town.
- An archive of newsletters, tips or articles. An archive is defined as “a place where historical documents are preserved”. Having an archive for your newsletter, either paper or email, is a wonderful way to make your website more interesting and add content with very little extra work. You’ve already created the content; it makes sense to keep using it.
There are so many more possibilities depending on the kind of business you have. Get creative. But I can guarantee you that if you use some of the “sizzle” content suggestions above along with the eight “must-have” content pieces you will have a website that will get you new customers and that your existing customers will love.
